Hola mis amigos,
Well, we have finally made it. Finals week! I know, I shouldn't be so excited, but it floors me just how quickly this year went. My freshman year in college is just about over. It's mind-boggling.
As I'm desperately trying to study for my Bio final tomorrow, I can't help but to day dream a bit about all of the amazing things that have happened to me this year. A good priest friend of my family always encourages me to create lists at the end of school years called "End-Insights." He swears they make the most inspirational diary entries and some of the most hilarious attic surprises. So here are my 2007-2008 End-Insights:
Saludos y buena suerte con sus exámenes,
Michelle

~Buenos dias mis chicos,
If there is one thing that is simply indescrible here at Loyola, its the sunrise over the lake. Now that it's warmer, I suggest you all set that alarm clock a bit earlier and go experience this for yourself.
The Australian Loyolan Sunrise
The Morning Star paled slowly, the The The Cross hung low to the sea,
And down the shadowy reaches the tide came swirling free,
The lustrous purple blackness of the soft Australian Loyolan night,
Waned in the grey awakening that heralded the light; Still in the dying darkness, still in the forest dim, The pearly dew of the dawning clung to each giant limb,
Till the sun came up from ocean, red with the cold sea mist,
And smote on the limestone ridges, and the shining tree-tops kissed;
Then the fiery Scorpion vanished, the magpie’s note was heard,
And the wind in the sheoak wavered and the honeysuckles stirred;
The airy golden vapour rose from the river breast,
The kingfisher came darting out of his crannied nest, And the bulrushes and reed-beds put off their sallow grey And burnt with cloudy crimson at the dawning of the day.

Hello All,
I'
M GOING TO GUATEMALA THIS SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!! Tickets are being ordered Monday....IT'S A DONE DEAL! Oh, I'm so excited. Since last semester I have been trying to put together this service trip to San Lucas Toliman, a mission down in Guatemala. Back then, I never thought I would see the project through, but that all changed
last week. I was able to convince my parents to let me go and plans started to gain momentum. I'll be leaving June 28th and coming back to Chi-town on August 3rd....5 weeks!
I am just thrilled.
I have been talking to two girls here at Loyola who have already visited the mission and they are elated just to know that I am going. Let me tell you a bit about the mission. The Diocese of New Ulm in Minnesota established a parish in San Lucas Toliman over 30 years ago. This program began when Father Greg Schaffer (who was awarded an honorary Doctorate here at
Loyola for his work) began assisting the indigenous Mayan populations in Guatemala. Father Greg and his parish have made 3-acre plots available for over 2,500 families to use for farming. He has also provided the people with over 1,000 homes, a health-care program, a fully functional coffee plantation, and reforestation program. This is not to mention Fr. Greg's work with the children. Local education programs have taken people from a 97% illiteracy rate to over 85% literacy rate through the adult education program and parish grade schools.
This mission is simply amazing! I could not be more excited about this summer. I'll be going with Father Daffron, and my two friends, Paul and Chelsea. Be preared for pictures GALORE when I get back!
Saludos,
Michelle

HOPPY EASTER MIS AMIGOS!
I hope yo
u all had a peaceful and relaxing Easter. I went home on Thursday and it was glorious! There are usually seven people running around the Leahy-house, but my Dad and three of my siblings went to the Smokey Mountains for some good quality family-camping. So it was a beautiful five days of quiet peace with my mom and older brother. If this seems odd or selfish...chances are you have never come home to a house full of Leahys! Let's just say Animal Planet has been trying to get an interview out of us for a long time!
Just as I was getting ready to leave, yesterday, I went on my normal shopping spree--home edition. With my shopping bag I walked up and down the halls of the Leahy-house and pictured everything I saw in my dorm-room. Would this fit? Does this match my decor? Wouldn't that be tasty at 12:30 am? It's kind of like online-shopping in the convenience of your own home with do-it-yourself shipping and handling! During my Leahy-Mart run, though, my mom sitting at the kitchen table just started laughing. "Yes, mom. What's so funny?" She later told me that this "house-robbing," as she called it, (which seems a BIT harsh to me :) ) finally answered her question. Apparently, after each time I left for college, she was noticing things disappear. One time massive amounts of Shampoo....the next a few boxes of cereal....maybe even the chocolate she hides in that oh-so-secretive hiding spot. Having been caught red handed, I proceeded to say that what she called "house-robbing" was really just "house-shopping" --a college student's art!
Besides my house raiding ...I mean shopping...my mom and I got in some Oprah-time and did a little outside shopping out of town. It was just the relaxing-break I needed before the last push of the semester!
Hope you had a Hoppy Easter too!
Saludos,
Michelle

All I have to say is BUBBLE ICIOUS! If you have never had bubble tea, the time has come! A few of my friends and I went to Joy Lee's yesterday, a pan-Asian restuarant in Chinatown, and served to me slightly chilled and topped with fresh fruit was a coconut banana coffee bubble tea---the ambrosia of the new milennium...trust me! So for all of our bubble tea dilettantes out there, it's time to experience bubbleicious joy at Joy Lee. It is absolutely phenomenal.
Bubble tea is a tea beverage that originated in Taiwan in the late 1980s. Fondly called 珍珠奶 overseas, bubble tea is a mixture of tea (hot or iced), milk, and different fresh fruit or coffee. The bubbles in bubble tea are black gummy tapioca balls, often referred to in Asia as "black pearls." OK, don't get apprehensive about the tapioca.....they are simply scrumptious!
My friends and I stopped by a place called Chill Bubble Tea over the summer, but Joy Lee's in Chinatown trumps the Chill. All of the bubble tea at Joy Lee's was made with fresh chopped fruit including actual dragon and jack fruits. It was not expensive at all and the taste was "sabrosisima" (that's Spanish for delicious beyond compare!) But, let me post all of their drinks and you decide. I highly, highly, highly recommend Joy Lee's. They also have a location in Evanston as well. Stop by and check it out!
Hasta luego,
Michelle

Greetings cyber friends,
It's been quite sometime since we've had a nice little chat. Let me begin with the good news: I GOT IT! I GOT IT! I GOT IT! Last Tuesday, at 12:00 pm, I received some of the greatest news...drum roll please.....May I introduce you to one of the newest Loyola University Chicago Resident Assistants: your's truly;) It was a competitive position, but I managed to pull through with the constant prayers of my mom and parish priest! It is simply a phenomenal opportunity and I am just elated to be offered the position.
OK, now for the not-so-good-kind-of-annoying-simply-obnoxious news: today's forecast....snow....snow...snow....NO! Don't get me wrong, I love snow just as much as the next person....but chances are that that person is just as sick of winter, slush, and snow as I am. Snowflakes were delightful in December, even pleasant in January, but it's high time the birds started chirping and tulips started dancing here in March. SPRING, SPRING, SPRING PLEASE!
Sorry about that...sometimes I get a bit carried away. But, just between me and you, let's welcome spring into our cyber world with a few delectable spring recipes:
Strawberry mice!
Spring Fling Salad!
Blue Lagoon Bliss Smoothie!
Yellow jacket buzzing cupcakes!
If these spring recipes seem to just tickle your taste-buds visit http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=40809 and start spring now!
It's been fun,
Michelle

Hello everyone,
Currently sitting in our beautiful Information Commons, I am gazing out upon the wonders of our lake. It’s absolutely breathtaking. Seeing something so evanescent and so beautiful often makes me realize the beauty of my own life. I was hoping I could take a few moments with you to think about the beauty of our own lives and the sheer evanescence of life itself. Last Thursday, a terrible tragedy struck Northern University rendering six lives lost. Let us take a few moments to pray or remember those individuals whose lives were asked of them. Those students were students just like us, sitting in a lecture hall like we do every day. They were men and women with futures ahead of them, whose goals and dreams were silenced with one foul act. They were men and women walking in our shoes, living our life. I pray that God will hold their families in the palm of his hand and that the lives lost will always be remembered and cherished.
In loving memory of Ryanne Mace, Gayle Dubowski, Daniel Parmenter, Julianna Gehant, Catalina Garcia, and Steve Kazmierczak--Men and women like us.

I feel like we haven’t talked in ages. Recently, however, I have been operating on an over-booked over-homeworked schedule. My days were usually beginning at 6 am and ending at 6 am…..so let’s just say the library and I had a kind of mid-winter fling this week!
Requiring much of my energy has been the Resident Assistant application process, which involves three separate interviews. (Resident Assistants are hired by the University to work in the Residence Halls). I’ll have the news by February 26…..and, after my mom, you’ll be the first to know!
Also, I have been involved in another exciting aspect of University life. Drum roll please……………………. I am proud to present to you the newest member of the Undergraduate Admission’s Death Defying S.A. Berets. Student Ambassadors is our name, jaw-dropping tours is our game! Over the last few weeks as a new recruit I have endured Student Ambassador Boot Camp: 7 hours of classroom cross-training and a marathon of follow tours, accompanied by a complete mental examination, and Team Leader and Executive Board inspection. In any case, after this week I should proudly stand tall as a member of the greatest tour-guide platoon throughout the nation!
Compliments of yours truly, I would be honored to offer you your very own virtual tour of campus. Let me acquaint you with some of my favorite places on campus. I’ll be walking backwards...so warn me if I’m about to trip over any periods or semicolons….
Welcome to Loyola University Chicago Lake Shore Campus. As we begin our tour this evening let me begin by introducing you to Loyola’s permanent angels on campus, Mund and Elein. This quite strapping duo stands steadfast amid the erudite entrance of our Mundelein Center (one of our academic buildings on campus). As great receivers of prayer, our angles have been known to lend a helping hand on Art History Mid-terms as well as the occasional Acting 101 Finals. INSIDER’S SCOOP: The Mundelein Center was once an all women’s college and the tallest building in Chicago (all 14 floors of it). Mund and Elein welcome you…
Loyola also has its very own mansion on campus to fit all of our necessary “royal” needs! Voted one of the 30 most beautiful mansions in Chicago…not that we brag...Piper Hall is currently home to our Gannon Women’s Center and various benefits on campus.
Did I mention that Loyola’s Lakeshore campus features a lake? Feast your eyes upon the beauty of our very own Lake Michigan…..icebergs are a limited time offer!
Here is a look at what I like to call "Loyola Cod". Just North of this pier is Hartigan Park Beach--every Loyola girl's tanning dream!
Also here at Loyola we have our very own “Blue Light Specials” scattered all throughout campus. These are 11 second emergency response boxes located throughout campus. This security procedure is one of many that Loyola Campus Police take on campus to ensure the safey of all students.
Continuing our V.I.P. tour, here at Loyola we are lucky to have quite a celebrity permanently on campus. Elizabeth Ann Seton herself is a "Loyola frequent," who is often on prayer duty for our Biology, Pre-Med students and the occasional triple major, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics majors….whose prayers must come first!
Let me now welcome you to my favorite building on campus: Madonna della Strada Chapel. Recently having undergone a $6 million renovation project, our Madonna is simply stunning. Donning a beautiful new baptismal font and gorgeous imported Italian marble flooring, our chapel can now accommodate Baptisms and weddings for our alumni…..although I wouldn't put my name on the list just yet…no need for a husband at this point! Madonna is also home to our student 9pm Sunday masses, which are a glorious liturgy of music and prayer. Over 500 students attend every week--the largest regular on-campus student gathering!
"Going to the Chapel, Gonna get married."
My favorite Station of the Cross and stain glass window~
This beautiful glass building is our newest addition to the Loyola Family: the Richard J. Klarchek Information Commons. With new state-of-the-art technology, our “IC” stands proud as the Greenest or most environmentally efficient building in Chicago. Complete with solar-powered electricity, a run-off rain system, as well as computer-monitored windows that adjust to different temperatures and light intensities, our IC is every student's dream come true. The IC is home to (here come the numbers….) 700 student study spaces and 216 computer stations, 80% percent of which are PC and 20% Mac. However, if technology causes you severe mental anguish, the IC also offers a completely technology free reading room, complete with fireplace and the most sophisticated armchairs.
Moving right along, let me point out our observatory on campus. A current home to physics majors, our observatory has been put out of commission. Word on the street is it that a combination of the vibrations from the EL and the omnipresent Chicago-glow impeded proper telescope use.
Let us not forget our "activity superplex", CFSU, Centennial Forum Student Union--the one-stop-hot-spot for student life. Feeling a little out-of-the-loop? Been spending way too much quality time with your Calculus book? Need a life? CFSU is the answer. Whether it is information about upcoming Loyola events on campus, like tickets tickets to see Plain White T's, or $5 tickets to the world-acclaimed production of Wicked, CFSU has it all.
Finally, the window to the world beyond Loyola….our EL. Directly behind what I like to call “Loyola’s Time Square”, the red-line Loyola stop; although it looks kind of Maroon to me...if you catch my drift! Sporting their maroon and gold LU paraphernalia, Loyola students can be spotted all over the great city of Chicago. Keep an eye out for us!
Well, what do you think? Oh, don’t worry you’ve just begun to see Loyola…..S.A. Updates to follow!
This S.A. goes marching on....
Over and out,
Michelle
